Power BI Blog: Custom Button Page Navigation
16 July 2020
Welcome back to this week’s edition of the Power BI blog series. This week, we look at an alternative way for users to navigate through pages in Power BI.
Imagine that we have a simple report that has four pages, one page for each quarter:
If you want to provide your users with an alternative method of navigating the report, we can insert interactive buttons. To insert buttons, we navigate to the Insert tab on the Ribbon, and select the Buttons option. I have elected to use the arrow button for this example, but there are other buttons to choose from, should you wish:
We can then go through each page and insert the appropriate buttons:
As it stands, the buttons have no actions assigned to them, so they are as reactive as a static image. To assign an action when a user clicks on the button, select the button, then navigate to the Visualizations panel. In the Visualizations panel, toggle On for Action, then change the Type to ‘Page navigation’ and then set the appropriate destination. In this case we want the right arrow to bring us to Quarter 2, so in the Destination drop down we can select Q2:
Repeat this process for the other quarters in the report, creating buttons and assigning their respective destinations, as required.
Users viewing this report on the Power BI app online can now use these buttons to navigate to the different pages in the report.
That’s it for this week, come back next week for more on Power BI.
In the meantime, please remember we offer training in Power BI which you can find out more about here. If you wish to catch up on past articles, you can find all of our past Power BI blogs here.
